Nike Signs Chivas, and the Timing Isn't an Accident

Nike just made its biggest Liga MX move in years. Starting with the Apertura 2026 season, the swoosh becomes the exclusive sponsor and supplier of Club Deportivo Guadalajara, ending Chivas' decade-long run with Puma. The club is calling the new era Futuro Sagrado.

Consider the timing. Nike dropped this news in the middle of a World Cup being played across Mexico, the United States, and Canada. A US brand is attaching itself to the most defiantly Mexican club in the country, while the region hosts the sport's biggest tournament.

Chivas is not a normal signing. The club is known for fielding only Mexican players, a tradition that goes back generations and earned it the name El Rebaño Sagrado, the Sacred Herd. Those red and white stripes carry a specific kind of national pride. More than 40 million fans follow the club across Mexico and the United States, and that cross-border base is the real prize here.

The choice also says something about who Nike wants. Over the past year the brand walked away from Club América, Chivas' fiercest rival, and stepped back from Pumas UNAM. Nike thinned out its Liga MX roster and kept the club with the strongest identity. Call it a bet on culture over volume.

There is history between these two. Nike and Chivas tried this once before, during the Invierno 1997 tournament. That deal collapsed after two matches over a fight with the club's shirt sponsors. Nearly thirty years later, both sides are running it back with a lot more at stake.

For now the kits stay hidden. Chivas debuts the first Nike uniform July 18 at home against Toluca to open Apertura 2026, the day before the World Cup final. Expect the release to hit Nike.com and Tienda Chivas around the same time.
